Artist Statement
I find myself switching back and forth between oils and ink, canvas and paper. In many of my works, figures emerge and shape themselves to suit their needs; especially with oils at a certain point, I’m no longer in control, and instead engage in a dialogue with the images. Birds and symbols related to humanity (umbilical cords, eggs, bones, etc.) often accompany images of my women. I periodically return to inks and the calligraphic pen, summoning the female figures and binding them with meditative swirls, curls and loops. Earthy reds, siennas, and ochres frequently come into the scene, which I feel best helps me connect to my work. They ground me before I leap into tartier, cooler, and creamier colors.
